VIT University or VIT, formerly called Vellore Engineering College, is a private university in Tamil Nadu, India. Founded in 1984, as Vellore Engineering College, by G. Viswanathan, the institution offers 20 undergraduate, 34 postgraduate, four integrated and four research programs. It has campuses in Vellore and Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. A new 200-acre campus called VIT-AP located at Amaravati (the new state capital of Andhra Pradesh state) is under construction. Classes will be started in July 2017. N. VIT University admits students on the basis of merit through an online entrance exam. VIT organizes its own entrance exam, called the Vellore Institute of Technology Engineering Entrance Examination (VITEEE). It is conducted every year in the month of April and May. In 2015, over two lakh students or two hundred thousand students appeared for the entrance examination. The exam has been conducted online since 2013.The VITEEE has consistently been easier than other engineering entrance exams like JEE Mains (formerly AIEEE) and JEE Advanced (formerly IIT-JEE).


VIT offers academic programs in Engineering, Technology, Applied Sciences, and Management. It offers 20 undergraduate programs, 34 postgraduate, four integrated MS courses, and four doctoral programs. VIT consolidated its disciplines into 10 Schools of Study with the addition of the VIT Law School at its Chennai campus.

Research centers are part of the schools to encourage collaboration between the research and coursework areas and provide opportunity for coursework students to participate in research projects. The university organizes industrial workshops like Automotive Engineering, organized by ParaMek Technologies in GraVitas Fest.

The university is among the first in India to implement the Fully Flexible Credit System (FFCS) which gives the students flexibility to make their own time tables by choosing the subjects and the faculties under whose guidance they want to study.

Vellore Campus

The university’s main campus in Vellore is on 365 acres of land. It is divided by the Chennai–Bangalore railway line. The academic portion of the campus and the women’s hostels are to the south of the railway tracks while the northern portion houses the men’s hostels and the outdoor stadium. VIT is in the city of Vellore in India’s southern state, Tamil Nadu, between Chennai and Bangalore. It is 130 km west of Chennai and 180 km east of Bangalore. The nearest airport is Chennai (two and half hours drive). Vellore-Katpadi Junction is the nearest railway station, 3 km from campus and accessible by train and road from Chennai and Bengaluru. It is 5 km from the Andhra Pradesh border and approximately 33 km from Chittoor.

Two main college fests are conducted in VIT: graVITas and Riviera.

GRAVITAS is a techfest (technology oriented festival) conducted in August/September.

Riviera is a sports and cultural festival. According to organizers for Riviera 2011, it pulled more than 300 participants from over 20 colleges and universities. Rivera 2013 saw popular names like Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Sukhwinder Singh, Chiyaan Vikram, Siddarth, singer Kartik and many more. ParaMek Technologies from New Delhi conducted a workshop on Automotive Engineering during the fest which was attended by more than 450 students.

Amaravati campus

VIT will be the first university to set up a campus in Amaravati, the new capital city of Andhra Pradesh. The new state private university will be called VIT-AP. VIT-AP has been allotted a 200-acre land parcel (in two phases), with the university paying ₹50 crores towards the purchase of the first 100 acres.[18] Construction of the first academic and hostel buildings will commence in November 2016, with classes scheduled to commence in July 2017. The campus will offer five B.Tech programmes and a five-year M.Tech (Software Engineering) programme for students who have completed their 12th standard. Apart from these, research programmes including Ph.D. will be offered.

Bhopal Campus

Dr.GV founded Vellore Engineering College in 1984 at Vellore. Sankar Viswanathan, Vice President (Chennai Campus)

Sankar Viswanathan, Vice President (Chennai Campus) was born on 13th April 1966. He completed his Advanced Diploma in Engineering Technology, at Chisholm Institute, Melbourne, Australia. He has held honoured positions as the Chairman, and Vice-Chairman of Vellore Engineering College, Vellore before taking over charge as the Pro-Chancellor (Academic) at VIT. He has also served as the Secretary of the North Arcot Educational & Charitable Trust of Vellore. He has always been a very proactive person and has involved himself in all the activities of the University. He has always evinced a keen involvement with the VIT family. He is an active member of the Board of Management, VIT and displays a keen interest in the affairs of the college and being a student friendly person is avidly interested in the academic progress of the students and staff.

Sekar Viswanathan, Vice-President (In-charge of International Relations, Placements and AP Campus)

Sekar is a rank holder in Electronics and Communication Engineering from University of Madras. He received his Master’s degree in Computer Science from Rochester Institute of Technology, USA. He has a Ph.D. in the area of faculty motivation from University of Madras. During the 90s he served as the Vice-Chairman of his alma mater, Vellore Engineering College (which was later renamed as VIT). During this period, he introduced a number of new programmes and initiatives which paved way for the university status of VIT.Later Sekar went to USA and worked at IBM, NetClerk and to gain international industrial experience. conferred the “Best Engineering Manager” and “Best Achiever” awards on him.

G V Selvam,Vice – President (Vellore Campus)

A man of few words, Mr.Selvam believes in and lives by the precept, ‘Actions speak louder than words.’​​

An MBA graduate from the Univeresity of Madras, Mr. G. V. Selvam assumed charge as Vice Chairman of Vellore Engineering College in 1999, and worked towards elevating the institution to a University.Following the footsteps of his illustrious father, Mr.Selvam spearheaded the evolution of the erstwhile Vellore Engineering College to VIT University, an institution of international repute. He assumed charge as the first Pro Chancellor of VIT University. This bestowed on him the rare honour of being the Youngest Pro-Chancellor in the world as cited in the Limca Book of Records, 2005. He was the Vice President of the VIT Chennai Campus in its formative years, from 2010 to 2013, when he built the campus from scratch.

  • Dr. Anand A. Samuel – Vice Chancellor

    Dr. Anand A Samuel completed his Bachelors in Engineering from the College of Engineering, Guindy and went on pursue his Masters in IIT Madras and his PhD in Anna University. His wide array of experience includes a couple of years serving in the Industry and with over 20 years of experience in teaching in Anna University. He has been a part of VIT for the past 13 years and he has been the Vice- Chancellor since 1st October 2015. He is a recipient of Life Time Achievement Award from QCFI. He has published more than 90 research papers in Journals and Conference, written a book on Total Quality Management, completed 5 funded research projects and has organised more than 20 Faculty Development Programmes in our University.

    Dr. S. Narayanan – Pro-Vice Chancellor

    Dr. S. Narayanan received his Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering, Masters and Doctorate in Industrial Engineering and Management from Pondicherry University. With nearly 29 years of teaching experience, 14 years of research experience and 2 years of industrial experience, he has contributed more than 100 research papers in various Scopus Indexed Journals. His areas of interest include Industrial Engineering and Management, Manufacturing etc., Ten Scholars have been awarded Ph.D under his guidance and he has provided guidance for more than 20 M.Tech student projects. He is currently guiding 6 Ph.D scholars.

    Dr. V Raju – Pro-Vice Chancellor

    Prof. Raju comes to VIT from the State University of New York, where he has been a Professor of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Dean of the School of Engineering Technologies and the Director of Science and Technology Programs. In the past, he was associated with the Rochester Institute of Technology as a Professor of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering Technologies and the Chair of the Manufacturing Engineering Technology Department; he was a Professor of Manufacturing Technology and the Director of the Centre for Advanced Manufacturing Studies at the Purdue School of Engineering, Indiana University – Purdue University; and the Director of the Division of Engineering Sciences and Technology at the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University.

    Dr. P. Gunasekaran – Pro-Vice Chancellor (Chennai Campus)
    Dr. P. Gunasekaran, former Vice Chancellor of Thiruvalluvar University, Vellore, a renowned Senior Professor of Microbiology from Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai has 33 years of teaching and research experience in Microbiology, Biotechnology and Genomics. He had his Ph.D. degree from Haryana Agricultural University, D.Sc. degree from Madurai Kamaraj University and Post-doctoral experience from CNRS, France and MIT, USA. He served as the President of Biotechnology Research Society of India and the President of Association of Microbiologists of India. He is the recipient of Tamil Nadu Scientist award, Alagappa Centenary Excellence Award, Louis Pasteur Award and Lifetime achievement award from the Indian Association of Applied Microbiologists and Biotechnology Research Society of India.

    The highly distributed computing environment at VIT University, which includes 93 Servers, 499 Workstations, 4232 Desktops (Intel & AMD), 489 Printers and over 1170 Laptops (Dell, HP, IBM & Lenovo), uses cutting-edge computer simulation to solve problems for industry and academia.     Sustainable practices @ VIT University

    VIT University leads the green initiative to promote sustainable practices in its lush and verdant campus. A few remarkable programmes include energy conservation, water conservation and waste recycling. The in-house transportation policy and the extensive research programmes are certain other sustainable initiatives to uphold green values.

    VIT campus is spread across a vast area of 250 acres. A striking feature of VIT is the well- planned and comprehensive infrastructure provided for both students and faculty. Fully furnished and well-equipped labs decorate every building in the University with over 55 servers to manage all the data transmissions. Moreover, the university is blessed with ample features that support all kinds of events – Auditoriums, plush open spaces, outdoor stages and much more.
    A striking feature of VIT is the well-planned and comprehensive infrastructure provided for both students and faculty.     ‘Anna Audi ‘ commonly used by students is nothing short of being a marvel. Able to accommodate 1800 students and spread over an area of 15436 sq. feet , it has been built with centralised air conditioners , Wi-fi service and a spectacular stage along with green rooms and perfect amount of lighting. This auditorium is used for various events and conferences.

As a part of this process, VIT emphasizes the importance of sports and considers them as an integral part of the curriculum. VIT has a number of centres for physical education and sports activities that help the students maintain fitness and develop a competitive spirit. Its numerous outdoor playgrounds and indoor courts are spread over a 20-acre area.


    VIT has been amply blessed with three fully equipped multi cuisine canteens present at three strategic locations in college. Two at the far ends of college, one each in G D Naidu Block and the Silver Jubilee Tower and one more at the centre of the college near the Technology Tower. All the three canteens are on contract basis with external caterers and provide quality food at very student friendly prices.
