VIT University or VIT, formerly called Vellore Engineering College, is a private university in Tamil Nadu, India. Founded in 1984, as Vellore Engineering College, by G. Viswanathan, the institution offers 20 undergraduate, 34 postgraduate, four integrated and four research programs. It has campuses in Vellore and Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. A new 200-acre campus called VIT-AP located at Amaravati (the new state capital of Andhra Pradesh state) is under construction. Classes will be started in July 2017. N. Chandrababu Naidu, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and M. Venkaiah Naidu, a Union Minister, participated in the foundation ceremony. Foundation stone for VIT Bhopal campus at Sehore, Madhya Pradesh was laid down by Mr. Shivraj Singh Chouhan (Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh) on 20 October 2016.

Admissions

VIT University admits students on the basis of merit through an online entrance exam. VIT organizes its own entrance exam, called the Vellore Institute of Technology Engineering Entrance Examination (VITEEE). It is conducted every year in the month of April and May. In 2015, over two lakh students or two hundred thousand students appeared for the entrance examination. The exam has been conducted online since 2013.The VITEEE has consistently been easier than other engineering entrance exams like JEE Mains (formerly AIEEE) and JEE Advanced (formerly IIT-JEE).

Academics

VIT offers academic programs in Engineering, Technology, Applied Sciences, and Management. It offers 20 undergraduate programs, 34 postgraduate, four integrated MS courses, and four doctoral programs. VIT consolidated its disciplines into 10 Schools of Study with the addition of the VIT Law School at its Chennai campus.

Research centers are part of the schools to encourage collaboration between the research and coursework areas and provide opportunity for coursework students to participate in research projects. The university organizes industrial workshops like Automotive Engineering, organized by ParaMek Technologies in GraVitas Fest.

The university is among the first in India to implement the Fully Flexible Credit System (FFCS) which gives the students flexibility to make their own time tables by choosing the subjects and the faculties under whose guidance they want to study.

Campuses

Vellore Campus

The university’s main campus in Vellore is on 365 acres of land. It is divided by the Chennai–Bangalore railway line. The academic portion of the campus and the women’s hostels are to the south of the railway tracks while the northern portion houses the men’s hostels and the outdoor stadium. The parts are connected by three subways.

The campus resembles a city, with lake, gardens, lawns, residential complexes, food courts, hair salons and wide roads. The campus has its own water supply and backup electricity supply along with shopping complexes to cater to the needs of residents

VIT is in the city of Vellore in India’s southern state, Tamil Nadu, between Chennai and Bangalore. It is 130 km west of Chennai and 180 km east of Bangalore. The nearest airport is Chennai (two and half hours drive). Vellore-Katpadi Junction is the nearest railway station, 3 km from campus and accessible by train and road from Chennai and Bengaluru. It is 5 km from the Andhra Pradesh border and approximately 33 km from Chittoor.

Two main college fests are conducted in VIT: graVITas and Riviera.

GRAVITAS is a techfest (technology oriented festival) conducted in August/September.

Riviera is a sports and cultural festival. According to organizers for Riviera 2011, it pulled more than 300 participants from over 20 colleges and universities. Rivera 2013 saw popular names like Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Sukhwinder Singh, Chiyaan Vikram, Siddarth, singer Kartik and many more. ParaMek Technologies from New Delhi conducted a workshop on Automotive Engineering during the fest which was attended by more than 450 students.

Amaravati campus

VIT will be the first university to set up a campus in Amaravati, the new capital city of Andhra Pradesh. The new state private university will be called VIT-AP. VIT-AP has been allotted a 200-acre land parcel (in two phases), with the university paying ₹50 crores towards the purchase of the first 100 acres.[18] Construction of the first academic and hostel buildings will commence in November 2016, with classes scheduled to commence in July 2017. The campus will offer five B.Tech programmes and a five-year M.Tech (Software Engineering) programme for students who have completed their 12th standard. Apart from these, research programmes including Ph.D. will be offered.

Bhopal Campus

Foundation stone for VIT Bhopal campus at Sehore, Madhya Pradesh was laid down by Mr. Shivraj Singh Chouhan (Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh) on 20 October 2016. Bhopal campus to be spread over an area of 100 acres with an investment of ₹500 crores.

Dr.G.VISWANATHAN – Chancellor

Dr.GV founded Vellore Engineering College in 1984 at Vellore. He envisaged that this institution would offer world-class education to students who would in turn create an indelible impact on the society. The engineering college that started with an intake of 180 students in 1984 has evolved as a university with two campuses. Over 25,000 students are enrolled in 53 undergraduate and graduate programs with nearly 16,000 residing on the campus. It attracts students and professors from different parts of the world. It houses more than 1000 international students on campus. For the past two years, VIT University has been ranked #1 private engineering institution in India. Sankar Viswanathan, Vice President (Chennai Campus)

Sankar Viswanathan, Vice President (Chennai Campus) was born on 13th April 1966. He completed his Advanced Diploma in Engineering Technology, at Chisholm Institute, Melbourne, Australia. He has held honoured positions as the Chairman, and Vice-Chairman of Vellore Engineering College, Vellore before taking over charge as the Pro-Chancellor (Academic) at VIT. He has also served as the Secretary of the North Arcot Educational & Charitable Trust of Vellore. He has always been a very proactive person and has involved himself in all the activities of the University. He has always evinced a keen involvement with the VIT family. He is an active member of the Board of Management, VIT and displays a keen interest in the affairs of the college and being a student friendly person is avidly interested in the academic progress of the students and staff.

Sekar Viswanathan, Vice-President (In-charge of International Relations, Placements and AP Campus)

Sekar is a rank holder in Electronics and Communication Engineering from University of Madras. He received his Master’s degree in Computer Science from Rochester Institute of Technology, USA. He has a Ph.D. in the area of faculty motivation from University of Madras. During the 90s he served as the Vice-Chairman of his alma mater, Vellore Engineering College (which was later renamed as VIT). During this period, he introduced a number of new programmes and initiatives which paved way for the university status of VIT.Later Sekar went to USA and worked at IBM, NetClerk and Walmart.com to gain international industrial experience. Walmart.com conferred the “Best Engineering Manager” and “Best Achiever” awards on him.

G V Selvam,Vice – President (Vellore Campus)

A man of few words, Mr.Selvam believes in and lives by the precept, ‘Actions speak louder than words.’​​

An MBA graduate from the Univeresity of Madras, Mr. G. V. Selvam assumed charge as Vice Chairman of Vellore Engineering College in 1999, and worked towards elevating the institution to a University.Following the footsteps of his illustrious father, Mr.Selvam spearheaded the evolution of the erstwhile Vellore Engineering College to VIT University, an institution of international repute. He assumed charge as the first Pro Chancellor of VIT University. This bestowed on him the rare honour of being the Youngest Pro-Chancellor in the world as cited in the Limca Book of Records, 2005. He was the Vice President of the VIT Chennai Campus in its formative years, from 2010 to 2013, when he built the campus from scratch.
